What is balayage?

Balayage is a bespoke colouring technique that can give you a subtle or extreme change depending on the look you desire.  Usually, balayage is natural looking and low maintenance, with a few subtle lighter highlights added to create a sunkissed look.  Some clients prefer a bolder look using bright vibrant colours (which requires more up-keep.)

What should I ask for when booking in for balayage?

Clients also ask for babylights or ombre, which are slightly different to balayage.  We can help to clarify which look you want during your complimentary hair colour consultation.

How long will my balayage appointment take?

The process depends on the look you desire.  For example, if you have natural hair which hasn’t been coloured before and simply want to have a few different shades added, it might take just one appointment.  Colour application alone takes at least 45 minutes dependant on your hair length/thickness. Sometimes we may need to use a toner within the colour service. This is used normally to soften any unwanted warmth after the lighting service.

If you have previous colour on your hair or you are going for a creative colour (pink/ purple/bright red/ blue/grey etc ) we would probably need to lighten your hair first so it can take the creative colour. Again, we may need to use a toner within the colour service (to soften the colour or take away unwanted warm tones).  That normally takes more than one session/stages.  At Bliss Hair, we pride ourselves on looking after the hair’s integrity and condition.  The slower the process, the better the result.

What do I need to do before I come in for my hair colour appointment?

Prior to your colour appointment, we will invite you in for a complimentary hair colour consultation so you can talk to your stylist about your ideas. We can give you advice and explain the process, time and costs involved to achieve your look. A hair strand test may also be taken to assess how well your hair will take the colour you desire.  We also do skin test at least 48 hours before your hair colour

If the hair isn’t in a condition we feel could handle the colour straight away, we may advise a course of Olaplex treatments or intense treatments beforehand to rebuild the hair.

What are the ‘cons’ of having balayage?

The great news is that this is a relatively low maintenance look so most clients book in for an 8 week follow-up appointment.  During this appointment, we might recommend a toner to refresh your colour (which may begin to fade), an Olaplex or moisture treatment to nourish your hair, and a cut and blowdry to keep your style looking fab.

Natural balayage:  We usually recommend a follow-up balayage colour appointment after 16 weeks.  By then clients usually feel their hair has grown enough and they would like lighter pieces added higher up the hair again.

More dramatic balayage:  Depending on the condition of your hair and the look you desire, we may recommend a course of treatments to get your hair ready for the colouring process.  It may take more than one appointment to create your desired look.  We may also recommend specific products to use at home to help protect your colour from fading.  We usually recommend a follow-up balayage colour appointment after 8 weeks.

Vibrant colour balayage:  This style of balayage involves the most dedication as fashion colours tend to fade the most. We recommend you buy Fabuloso colour conditioner to use at home as this helps top up the vibrancy of your colour.  We also advise you come in for a toner to refresh your colour after 4 to 6 weeks.  Vibrant colour balayage is great for clients who get bored with their colour quickly because they can update their look once the colour fades.
