Treat Mum on Mother’s Day

happy mothers day hand lettering handmade calligraphyEvery mum needs a little pampering every now and then and Mother’s Day is the perfect excuse… which started us thinking about Mothering Sunday and where on earth it comes from!

Did you know that Mother’s Day is a modern celebration which was first celebrated around 1908 when Anna Jarvis held a memorial for her mother Ann Jarvis in Virginia, America.  Ann Jarvis was a peace activist who had cared for wounded soldiers on both sides of the Civil War and created Mother’s Day Work Clubs to address public health issues.

Her daughter spent several years campaigning to have a special day as a holiday to recognise the efforts of mothers and in 1910 several states officially recognised Mother’s Day!  By the 1920s the event began to gain momentum with companies selling Mother’s Day cards – something that the original campaigner disagreed with.

Mother’s Day is usually celebrated on a Sunday in March and complements similar celebrations honouring family members such as Father’s Day.  There is now a growing movement trying to make Siblings Day a special celebration!

So to all the mums out there, we wish them a Happy Mother’s Day from Bliss.   And if you want to thank your mum for everything she does for you why not check out some of our Mother’s Day Pamper Packages?  Don’t forget… Mother’s Day is on Sunday March 15th.
